History of Zephyranthes

Zephyranthes - which known as rain lily or storm lily since they often come into bloom after it rains. They are originally from the family of Amaryllidaceae and native to the southeastern United States, Central America, and South America.

In Indonesia called as bunga bakung, bunga bawang-bawangan, or bunga coklat. It's first brought to Indonesia by the Dutch colonial for more then a hundred years ago (no one know the exact date). It's once said, the Dutch brought the bulbs (Z. Rosea, Z. Candida and Z. Grandiflora) inside a chocolate tin of Van Hauten which up until today they are called by this name, the chocolate flower.

Zephyranthes exploration in the world were begin with Dr. Thad Howard in the America, while in Indonesia, the pioneer of breeding them are by Felix Fadjar Martha from the 80's.

Fadjar's Pink, a Zephyranthes Grandiflora strains that's originally from Indonesia
Firstly recorded from Hebertia, Jack E. Craig grown them in the early 90's which he bought from an orchid nursery in West Jakarta and pass the bulbs to Felix Fadjar Martha. Even my aunt has this strains in her garden villa, which she planted in early 90's. Nobody knows where this strains came from, as if the habitable of zephyranthes are very far from Indonesia. This Fadjar's Pink are the great-great grandmother for modern hybrids zephyranthes today as it's the only grandiflora strains that is fertile.
